The Whole Story (In Words, Not Pictures)

Kate woke up around 3:30 in the morning Sunday to go to the bathroom and felt a contraction. At that point, it was a normal evening since she'd been having irregular contractions since Thursday. She laid in bed and could not fall back to sleep. Around 4 in the morning Kevin and Kate heard some weird noises coming from Jack's room. Kate went in and immediately smelled vomit. Yep, Jack was sick. We brought him to our room to clean him up and try to comfort him. Kate's contractions picked up in intensity and were about every 8-10 minutes. We decided this could be for real so we finished packing our overnight bag and got a bag put together for Jack.

We talked about walking to Winn Dixie to get PediaLyte for Jack and to see if it was "real" labor. By the time we were ready to go, Kate didn't want to go anywhere and was contracting nearly every 4 minutes so Kevin went by himself and Kate woke our houseguests. Luckily, our great friends, the Walshes, were visiting so they stayed home with Jack while we headed to the hospital.

We got to the hospital at 6:50 in the morning and Kate was dilated 5 cm so we were admitted. We called our friends, the Youngs, to get Jack and take him to their house so the Walshes could head back to SOS at Montgomery, AL.

The labor went very quickly and was very painful. Kevin knew we were getting close when he was comforting Kate by saying "Sssshhhhh... Sssshhhhhh" and rubbing her back and Kate replied by saying, "Don't shush me. I can make whatever noise I want."

The doctor came to check on us and break the bag of water at 9 am; Kate was dilated 7 - 8 cm. There was some meconium in the fluid, adding a minor complication to the delivery, and making it a tad more stressful for us. The doctor predicted he'd be back in the room by 9:45 to deliver the baby and he was pretty darn close!

At 9:24, a nurse came to check on the baby's heartbeat and put on an internal monitor but when she went to do so she found that Kate was "complete," dilated 10 cm and ready to push. The room filled with doctors, nurses and, a pediatrician.

Kate pushed through 4 contractions and Elizabeth was born at 9:48 am!

I hope this means that I'll be able to shoot them out with ease like you. I mean, except for the unbelieveable pain.

Glad it went well and she came out screaming. You're lucky, in so many ways.

I can totally empathize with the shhhshing.. Kevin meant well but things are way more agitating in that situation! So did you guys end up reading "Husband Coached Childbirth?" Well, although painful- what a beautiful birth story! Good job you two!
